Pitta - Nutritional Recommendations

This article describes how to achieve balance through proper nutrition.

Pitta Characteristics

Pitta types usually have a very good digestive fire. This is noticeable by the body showing strong signs when it comes to hunger and thirst. People with pitta characteristics have robust health and usually a lot of energy.

An imbalance of the pitta dosha has multiple effects. Firstly the utilisation of food becomes worse, which can lead to a lack of vital substances. The imbalance manifests itself through emotional irritability, sweating and frequent belching. Subsequently, it may cause heartburn, stomach irritation and diarrhea, as well as headaches and skin blemishes.

The triggers of such disorders are manifold. Intense heat during summer can be as much a cause as emotional stress or anger. Even a poor diet with too much meat, sugar or alcohol can cause problems.

When pitta is not in equilibrium, agni loses power. Acidifying foods should be avoided in such cases, and one shoudl take a closer look at the eating behavior. Are you chewing peoperly and eating slowly? The digestive juices can be further strengthened by incorporating more vegetables and salads, as well as raw vegetable juices.

A balance of the pitta dosha can also be achieved by consuming bitter or sweet spices such as coriander, fennel, cinnamon, cardamom, dill, saffron and tart herbs. Ghee can help compensate for too much acid or heat.

Tips for Balancing Pitta

  • Avoid spicy foods and herbs.

  • Eat one main meal per day, preferably for lunch. The digestive fire (agni) is the strongest during this time and heavy meals can be digested better. This meal should contain plenty of raw vegetables or salad.

  • Avoid beverages and food that are acid-based.

  • Physical activity works wonders against stress and tension.

  • Try being more tolerant and patient with yourself and others.
