Slowly but surely the year is taking its course. Spring is on our doorstep and according to Ayurveda, it is the ideal time to get into the swing of detoxing.
It is quite normal that toxins accumulate in the body over time. These toxins are absorbed via the food we eat and the air that we breathe. Ama (referred to as toxins in the human body) cause an imbalance that can lead to various symptoms:
lack of appetite
increase in sleep requirement
white coating on the tongue in the morning
swollen ankles, feet or hands
Ayurveda firmly believes in detoxing on a regular basis, because the body is only able to function and heal when cleansed and in complete balance.
The ideal time to initiate detoxing is between the end of February and the end of April, as waste products are more easily released.
A fasting diet does not only rid the body of fatigue but also strengthens the immune system, bringing the body and mind to rest.
Ayurvedic anti-ama treatments that are targeted to rid the body of acids, toxins and other waste products, are ideal for those who:
suffer from stress on a regular basis
follow an unhealthy and irregular diet
suffer from metabolic, skin and musculoskeletal system ailments
have an uneasy feeling
Every three days or at least twice a week, take one day to fast for the period of a month. Start the morning off with 2 glasses of hot water. For lunchtime enjoy 300 ml of freshly squeezed vegetable juice that can be refined with cumin or coriander. To quench your thirst simply drink normal still or boiled water. In the evening one glass of freshly pressed fruit juice can be consumed, whereby the following should be avoided: oranges, pineapple and grapefruit. It is advised to stick to sweet fruits or pomegranate.
Eat as normal in between fasting but remember to avoid meat, sausages, dairy products as well as fatty, salty, oily and backed food. Practicing yoga and going for short walks can energize the body and clear the mind.
Kapha, Pitta-Kapha & Vatta-Kapha
People with a lot of kapha are prone to ama and are therefore predestined for more regular acts of fasting rituals. Do not fast for extended periods of time without a break. Skip dinner every three days or at least twice a week for a month. Only consume a light soap the following evening.
Drink two liters of hot water infused with ginger on a daily basis. Moreover, steamed vegetables with spicy seasoning should be eaten. Avoid fresh fruit, sausages, meat and dairy products, as well as meals that contain too much fat, oil and salt.
Try to keep active by practicing yoga or going for short walks.
