Ayurvedic Meals - Wholesome Ayurvedic Spiced Rice

As part of our series dedicated to "Ayurvedic Meals", we are introducing spiced rice, which is not only healthy but very nutritious.

Quinoa has been cultivated as a crop in the Andes for more than 5000 years. These plants are undemanding and are therefore suitable for the cultivation in high attitudes, whereby the cultivation of other plants such as maize (corn) is not possible. Therefore quinoa is considered a staple food source in the Anders.

The quinoa seeds that are used for cooking because they are very rich in nutrients. Their protein and mineral content exceeds even the more well-known grains.

Alongside quinoa and rice, other ingredients are incorporated in the meal, that are typical to ayurvedic cuisine such as cardamom, turmeric and ghee. Each of these ingredients also possess their own positive health properties.

The Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup basmati rice

¾ cup quinoa

3 cups hot water

2 tsp ghee

1 carrot

6 cardamom pods

1 small cinnamon stick

1 pinch of saffron threads

¼ tsp turmeric powder

¼ teaspoon salt

¼ cup slivered almonds

Preparation

Cut the carrots into slices. Melt ghee in a pan and fry the cardamom pods and cinnamon stick for a few minutes. Mix in rice and quinoa, and add water, saffron, turmeric and salt. Let the ingredients cook for about 10 minutes and add the carrots to the pan thereafter. Add the slivered almonds and cook until the water has evaporated.

An easily digestible dish, that is well tolerated and digestible, while strengthening the immune system, blood and tissues.

The spiced rice provides strength and contains a lot of high-quality protein.
